The Costa Brava (The wild coast) extends northeast of Barcelona to the French
border. While it is most known for its beaches and resorts, the coast here is
scenic and rugged, with coves, cliffs, and mountaintop lookouts. Picturesque
towns and villages can be found all along the Costa Brava, as well as the Greek
and Roman ruins of Empúries. Don't expect to find one landscape, one light, one
vegetation, what you will find is a multitude of changing landscapes, evolving
as you advance in one direction or another. Two inland towns make for good
day-trips if you're vacationing on the coast. The riverside town of Girona
features an 13th-century cathedral, an old Jewish quarter. The area's most
well-known museum is in Figueres ; the Dalí Museum is a must for lovers of
surrealism.
